New Media Glossary
narrowcast
Transmitting data or programming only to addresses authorized to receive it. Used also to describe transmissions sent to a group of users with narrowly focused interests—ultimate fighting or gardening, for two.
NAS
See Network Attached Storage.
natural search
Results returned by search engines due to genuine relevancy, not because of paid inclusion or contextual advertising. Companies strive to optimize sites for natural search since high page rank is essentially free advertising. Ironically, one method to improve natural search rank is to run contextual marketing campaigns that boost inbound link counts.
navigation bar
A website’s collection of links to its own critical content areas, consistently presented on a site’s every page in a vertical or horizontal stripe. Navigation bars allow visitors users to move around easily in a site, no matter their current location.
navigation tool
Elements on a web page or set top box interface that allow people to locate and connect to the resources and programs they seek. These range from a website’s navigation bars and image maps to a TV remote’s previous channel and menu buttons.
negative match
Keyword or keyword phrase that marketers designate to prevent ads from appearing in contextual ad campaigns. A company that sells fireplace matches, for instance, will certainly include matches as a keyword, but might also be wise to preclude their ads appearing in any search that includes the word dating.
net neutrality
Model of internet governance that continues the global network’s open access policy, where the only limits on communication speed stem from the hardware and data line capacities of the host’s servers and the end user’s computers. High volume internet service providers have lobbied congress to implement a tiered service, arguing that thriving websites build large profits on the back of high speed data transfers for which they pay nothing. Advertisers, by contrast, benefit greatly from net neutrality, which guarantees that neither they nor their audience must pay extra just to deliver or watch a webmercial.
net TV
Conventional web browsing channeled through a set top box to display on standard TV screens. Also known as Internet TV.
network attached storage
Storage devices that are little more than a collection of large capacity hard disks. Web hosts and websites that serve large numbers of files use NAS boxes to separate content resources from operational resources, producing a faster and more secure hosting environment.
noise reduction
The process of removing perceptible imperfections from audio and video signals. In audio streams, this includes removing or reducing background hum and hissing. In video streams, it includes smoothing grainy pictures and removing scratches.
NVOD
Near Video On Demand describes a programming method where pay per view providers schedule the same content at short intervals throughout an entire day. This isn’t true video on demand since subscribers can’t start a new program exactly when they choose. Since they can start a program from the beginning every half-hour as scheduled, it’s “nearly” video on demand.
